    County town of Herefordshire, Hereford (/ˈhɛrɪfərd/) is a civil parish and cathedral city. Meaning "old road", the Welsh name for Hereford is Henffordd, and refers to the settlement that is Roman and Roman road at Stretton Sugwas nearby. Some time between AD 688 and 676, after which, due to Wales and Mercia border proximity, continued to grow was the settlement, becoming the West Mercia Saxon capital by the 8th century beginning, Hereford became the seat of Putta, Bishop of Hereford.
